Eli Schulman and his wife Esther opened Eli's The Place for Steak in 1966 in what was then the luxury hotel The Carriage House. Eli's soon became the spot for celebrities and dignitaries to dine. Everyone from Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. to Gayle Sayers of the
Chicago Bears and comedian Henny Youngman, all began to make Eli's their Place for Steak. In 1977, cheesecake dessert hit the menu and quickly became a marquee offering at Eli's the Place for Steak.
Enjoy a tasting of Eli's Couture Cheesecakes and become an official Eli's taste tester. Learn the history, philosophy, and how Eli's make their desserts. Although there is no Saturday production, there will be a walking tour of the factory. We return to the café to enjoy a slice of Eli's Cheesecake and a beverage.
Make your reservations now! The event is limited to 50 people.

With 75 years under its belt, a national ranking in US News and World Report, and the ASABE ¼ Scale Tractor Design championship, the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering had much to celebrate at the second annual "Celebrate ABE@Illinois."
The festivities were held September 25th and 26th on the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana campus. More than 80 alumni, faculty, students and staff came together to toast the Department for 75 years of excellence in research, scholarship and service.
Jim Steck, '90 AgM, was the ABE's "Professor for a Day" and gave a brief presentation on his position as president of Sloan Implement, the largest privately-owned John Deere dealership in the world.
Friday afternoon, participants enjoyed campus tours of The Cave, an immersive virtual environment; The Cube, an immersive, stereo-capable visualization chamber; and the new Business Instructional Facility (BIF) with the College of Business. More than 20 emeriti, alumni, faculty, and students attended these tours. Internal tours of the research laboratories in AESB followed the campus tours.
Friday evening, the festivities began to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Department at the I-Hotel. Saturday morning, students and alumni gathered at the ABE Farm to enjoy food, fellowship, and an exhibition tractor pull.
The weekend wound down at Jupiters at the Crossing, where several alumni, faculty and staff watched the Fighting Illini take on Ohio State.
"Our department has had much to celebrate this year," Dr. K.C. Ting, ABE Department Head acknowledged, "and we enjoyed the privilege of celebrating with our students and our alumni."
Tina Veal, Director of Alumni Relations at University of Illinois, was appointed to a one-year term on the Board of Directors for the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association (NAADA). The organization provides education and support for professionals, volunteers and student leaders who are dedicated to serving land-grant colleges of agricultural sciences and related programs. The network of members includes nearly 50 institutions from across the United States. The University of Georgia will host the next Annual Conference from June 6-9, 2010. -H Cookbooks Available for Holiday Season
Get ready for the holiday season by making an old favorite 4-H recipe, such as snickerdoodles, wheat bread, funny cake, or brownies. Many 4-H members remember the treats while learning food skills as part of their 4-H project work. Over the years, the memories remained, but the recipes were lost. A new cookbook, Favorite Recipes of Illinois 4-H Through the Years, includes all of the most requested recipes from the past 60 years and is available from the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
"4-H, families, and tradition are all part of the holiday season and having fond memories of 4-H. We want to celebrate the past, while we prepare today's youth for the future," said Sheri Seibold, State 4-H Specialist. "Foods projects were part of many 4-H members' experiences and the cookbook allows those fond memories to be shared with current and future generations."
More than 150 recipes from 4-H foods project books such as You Learn to Bake, ABC's of Food, Adventures in Cooking, It's Fun to Cook, Milk and Eggs, Meat in Your Meals, Pastry in Your Meals, and Yeast Breads in Your Meals are included in this 8/12 x 11' spiral bound cookbook. Recipes are listed by book, alphabetically, and by food category for easy reference.
The cookbook costs $15.00 plus shipping. It can be ordered online at www.4hfoundation.illinois.edu or by completing an order form available from your local Extension office. Bundles of 10 cookbooks are also available for a slight discount.
Besides cherished memories, the cookbook can help teach youth. Illustrations from the Pastry in Your Meals book are included to show the different steps to make a pie crust. Also included are illustrations from the Yeast Breads in Your Meals book, which show how to knead bread and form different kinds of rolls.
Proceeds from the cookbook will be used to support current 4-H foods project resources and training for 4-H volunteers. "As of September 2009, we have raised more than $40,000 from the sale of this cookbook," states Illinois 4-H Foundation Director Angie Barnard. "Supplies are limited and we anticipate completing this project in late January 2010. Many thanks to all who purchased this great cookbook! I hope it has sparked many fun memories!"
Favorite Recipes of Illinois 4-H Through the Years… would make a perfect birthday, holiday, or other special occasion gift for mothers, daughters, sons, grandmothers, 4-H leaders, or 4-H alums.

Members of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) played an important role in the design and construction of the "Gable House," the University of Illinois solar house that took second place in the 2009 Solar Decathlon design competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The competition challenges students to design, build and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar home.
U of I dominated the objective division, taking first place in three of the categories (hot water, appliances and home entertainment) and second place in two of the categories (comfort zone and net metering). U of I also took second place in one of the subjective categories, lighting design.
The U of I team was in first place at one point in the competition, but Germany moved ahead when it received a perfect score (150 points) in the biggest category, net metering. Net metering measures a home's energy use. The U of I Gable House used a 9-kilowatt solar energy system and produced four times the energy it needed, earning 137 points. But Germany's house was covered in black solar panels. Using an 18-kilowatt system, it generated a surplus of power even during three days of rain.
You can read more about the competition and the University of Illinois team at their website:

Congratulations to the 2009 Solor Decathlon Team!
